Newbury Geological Study Group (NGSG)   | How we are run

Newbury Geological Study Group

Evening Class 2018/2019

Two six week terms are proposed.

The  classes will be on Tuesdays, starting at 7:00 pm.  and run for about 2 hours. Maximum cost for the term will be £65.00 (Actual cost for Winter 2018 term was £40.00) , but we are not intending to make a profit so the cost will vary depending on numbers. Sorry no refunds after term starts and no concessions.  Minimum number to make the course viable is 12 and the maximum we can take is 29.

For those new to the group, Dr Les James has been teaching geology for 40 years and has run courses for both Reading and Oxford Universities. For many years he ran courses at Newbury College, but support for these declined, because of the high cost, so a few years ago NGSG started to run them on a non profit basis.  The last 10 week Oxford University courses run by Les at Reading University costs £175.00 (Oxford have discontinued all courses at Reading now). Our equivalent based on 12 attending would be £110.00.

Venue  This year will take place at St Bartholomew School, Newbury (entrance and car park from Buckingham Road).

Dates for first 6 week term are November 6th;13th;20th; 27th; December 4th and 11th . Dates for 2019 will be advised later.

Course Content

This years course will be  entitled ‘Rocks and Landscape’. It will continue with the theme started last year, but  will be suitable for new members. It will be a revision course for those who have been supporting us for some time.  There will be some links to to trips we are doing, but  there is no need to go on the trips to benefit from the course.

If you are interested let Helen know ( and you will be sent details.  Please note we will require a phone number and for Insurance purposes you must be a member to join the class.  Membership is free, but you must agree to our data protection policy to be a member.

Cancellation of a Class

If for any reason Les is unable to make a class we will let you know if there is time. We will if possible find an alternative lecturer, or if this is not possible we will run the class using lectures we have from on line sources.  If the class is cancelled or we run without a lecturer then we will refund the cost of the cancelled lecture (ie. the amount you have paid divided by 6).
