Newbury Geological Study Group

Evening Class 2018/2019

The first six week term (2018) is now complete, and there will be a second six week term with classes on  January 15th; 22nd ; February 5th; 12th;19th; 26th  2019 (no class 29th Jan)

The classes are  on Tuesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Maximum cost for the term will be £60.00, but we are not intending to
make a profit so the cost will vary depending on numbers. Sorry no refunds after term starts and no concessions. Minimum number to make the course viable is 12 and the maximum we can take is 29.

For those new to the group, Dr Les James has been teaching geology for 40 years and has run courses for both Reading and Oxford Universities. For many years he ran courses at Newbury College, but support for these declined, because of the high cost, so a few years ago NGSG started to run their own courses on a non profit basis.

Venue  St Bartholomew’s School, Newbury, RG14 6JP (Entrance and car park from Buckingham Road).

The class will be in room C10 in Curnock block. This is accessed via the student entrance which is clearly marked (note Reception will not be open in the evenings). If the door is locked then the entry code is 0163. The classroom can be found by proceeding straight ahead from the student entrance and through the next door ahead (don’t turn left). This will take you into the large community area (the area covered with the canvas dome).  Keep going ahead. Ignore the first door on the left and then go through the next door on the left.  Room C10 is the second classroom on the left. We will have someone at the door to direct those new to the class. Phone 07900 218617 if you have a problem finding us.

Course Content

This year the course is entitled ‘Rocks and Landscape’. In the 2019 term Les will be covering Scotland, SW.Ireland and S.Wales, with reference to plate tectonics and volcanicity world wide where this affects the older geology of the UK. This continues the theme started last year, but it will not be necessary to have attended last year’s course or to have any knowledge of geology to take part. It will be a revision course for those who have been supporting us for some time. There will be some links to trips we are doing, but  there is no need attend the trips to benefit from the course.

If you are interested email Helen ( Please note we will require a phone number and email for Insurance purposes and you must be a member to join the class.  Membership is free, but to be a member you must agree (by email or in writing) to our data protection policy. Cancellation of a Class

If for any reason Les is unable to take a class we will let you know if there is time. We will if possible find an alternative lecturer, or if this is not possible we will run the class using lectures we have from an on line source. If the class is cancelled or we run without a lecturer then we will refund the cost of the cancelled lecture (ie. the amount you have paid divided by 6).
